Brno’s Disappeared Cemeteries

Former cemeteries in Brno have become places of quiet pause. In some, fragments of cemetery walls remain; elsewhere, only abandoned crosses or gates leading nowhere. We will cycle into these forgotten landscapes of memory – each with its own atmosphere – guided by art theorist and author of Non-Places, Silvie Šeborová.

The closure of old cemeteries and the establishment of new ones occurred regularly in Brno. In 1785, the Viennese government ordered the abolition of all cemeteries within settlements and densely built-up areas. Another wave of closures followed in 1883 with the founding of the Central Cemetery. A number of cemeteries were closed and abolished in 1962 under a new directive from the Minister of Health concerning burial practices – including those in Maloměřice and Husovice.

Together, we will try to notice what remains in Brno – even when it is no longer visible at first glance.

Planned route:

  • Obřany Cemetery – plot on the slope above Fryčajova Street

  • Maloměřice Cemetery – today the Maloměřice Linden Alley

  • Husovice Cemetery – today the Marie Restituta Park
