Vila Stiassni
What happens when history falls silent for a moment – and we find ourselves in the private world of someone who helped shape it? The Benešes in Brno, staged at Villa Stiassni, takes us into the post-war visit of Edvard and Hana Beneš and opens the question of the price paid for the “rescue of the Republic” – and of Edvard Beneš’s role in a democracy that was collapsing.
The Czechoslovak Republic has been restored; the consequences of the Munich Agreement have been reversed. But at what cost? And to what extent did Edvard Beneš contribute to the gradual breakdown of democracy?
This production, created specifically for the Meeting Brno festival, offers a glimpse into the private moments the Beneš couple experienced during their post-war stay in Brno at Villa Stiassni. The script was written by Markéta Špetíková and directed by Michal Zetel.
