Non-places are locations we often pass by without noticing. They are not on the “map of experiences”, sometimes not even on the city map. Yet they carry layers of what Brno once was: labour, poverty, improvisation, at times harsh conditions – and at the same time neighbourliness and everyday ingenuity. On this walk, we will look precisely for these traces: places that change, disappear, reappear, and each time reveal something new.
The walk will be led by Silvie Šeborová, author of the guidebook Non-Places and curator. Together, we will explore the “forgotten” parts of the city – beyond the main routes – and read the landscape as a story: where people once lived in the makeshift conditions of workers’ colonies, why these neighbourhoods emerged, and what remains of them today. Do not expect sensations or nostalgia; rather, a thoughtful and grounded perspective that gives meaning to what at first glance may seem like emptiness.
