Two years have passed since November 1989, and debates about a new state arrangement – meant at last to deliver the promised greater autonomy for both parts of Czechoslovakia – are coming to a head. What initially looked like a revision of mutual relations suddenly threatens to become a definitive break-up. The dialogue between the then Czech Prime Minister Václav Klaus and the Slovak Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar promises a tense clash between two opposing – and yet, in some ways, strikingly similar – men.
To what extent was the dissolution of Czechoslovakia shaped by our different pasts? What were we willing to do so that the other side would want to remain in the shared state? And was the breakup driven above all by the egos of two central political leaders? Audiences will witness how the decision to divide the state was forged – in the unique setting of Villa Tugendhat, inseparably linked to this moment in history.
