Meeting point: at the former Bohéma Restaurant, Roosevelt Street
How did the repression against opponents of Nazism unfold? Why is there little known about the successful assassination of SS Hauptsturmführer August Gölzer? Can we speak of the end of the war as liberation, or was it more of a transition to a new, emerging dictatorship?
Publicist Martin Groman and historian Michal Stehlík, authors of one of the most popular Czech podcasts, will guide us through iconic locations related to Nazi occupation and the post-war reckoning.
Tour Route:
– Kounicovy Dormitories (executions of Czech resistance fighters)
– Intersection of Kounicova and Nerudova Streets (assassination attempt by resistance fighters Alois Bauer and Vladimír Blažka on SS Hauptsturmführer August Gölzer)
– Židenice Cemetery (memorial to victims of air raids and bombings in Brno)
– Augustinian Monastery Garden on Mendl Square (the so-called Brno Death March)
– Moravské Square (demolition of the German House)
– Dominican Square (site of President Edvard Beneš’s speech in which he stated, “The German question must be eradicated in the republic”)
Except for the intersection of Kounicova and Nerudova Streets, we will be getting off the bus, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
The event will be held only in Czech.
This event is organized in cooperation with the podcast Přepište dějiny.
