Schindler’s List + discussion with the author

The first and unique opportunity for the Czech audience to meet the author of the book upon which the Oscar-winning film Schindler’s List was based. We invite you to a discussion with the Australian writer Thomas Keneally (born 1935) followed by a screening of Schindler’s List. Talking with the author will be Daniel Low-Beer, whose foundation is currently building the Memorial to Schindler’s Ark and Löw-Beer Factory in the former “Schindler’s” factory in Brněnec.

The Löw-Beers have an important connection with Thomas Keneally’s book. The Löw-Beer family owned the factory where Oskar Schindler saved 1200 lives. They had to flee the Nazis in 1938. In 1944, Schindler began bringing Jews from the Krakow ghetto here, saving them from certain death in the concentration camps. The story became world famous thanks to Keneally’s book Schindler’s Ark and thanks to the film adaptation Schindler’s List from 1993.

In 2017, the Meeting Brno festival, in cooperation with the City of Brno, organised a meeting of the Löw-Beer, Tugendhat and Stiassni families. Daniel Low-Beer, grandson of the last pre-war factory owner in Brněnec, then founded the Arks Foundation – the Löw-Beer and Oskar Schindler families. Since then, Meeting Brno has also contributed to the restoration of the Brněnec site through its activities.

The programme will be in English and will be simultaneously interpreted into Czech.
